Know Your Rights

The best way to secure better wages, benefits, and a better future on the job, is by joining together with your fellow associates. Wal-Mart’s 1.4 million workers are more powerful when they speak together. Federal law protects your right to organize.

What You Can Do

You can do the following things at work, and it is against the law for your manager, or anyone from the company, to interfere.

Talk about the unionYou can talk about the union on company property, in the store and on work time provided it doesn’t interfere with your work. Any time you can talk about other topics like sports, movies, recipes - you can talk about the union. Management may try to convince you otherwise, but it is your right.

Fill out union cardsYou can fill out a card, and sign up other associates at work before or after a shift, and during all breaks in all non-work areas (break rooms, smoke areas, lunch rooms). You must be on a break (including paid breaks) and off the floor, to sign up your fellow associates, but you can do it at work.

Distribute union literatureYou can distribute union literature in the same way you can sign union cards. You can do it when you are on a break (including paid breaks), before or after work and in non-work areas.

What Management Can’t Do

It is also important to remember all the things management can’t do during a union campaign. If you encounter any of these behaviors, you should notify your contact within the union. They are there to help you.

Discipline or change conditionsManagement can’t threaten, coach, suspend, reprimand or fire you for supporting a union and exercising your rights. They also can’t change or reduce your hours or treat you differently than another associate because you support a union.

Ask questions about the unionManagement can’t ask you your opinion of the union or ask you for any information about union activities (i.e. who else is supporting it, where are the meetings, what’s going on, what do you think about it?).

Interfere with your RightsManagement can’t prevent you from exercising your rights to talk about the union or to sign union cards at work.

BribesManagement can’t offer you any raises or other improvements in order to influence your support for the union.
